The difference is fairly definite. A lot<\/em> is correct, alot<\/em> is not.<\/p>\n a lot (adverb)\u2014a great amount, much<\/p>\n \n There was a lot of cleaning up to do after dinner.<\/em>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n While I have some very early school work which clearly shows me writing alot<\/em>, they were also accompanied by my teacher\u2019s trusty red pen, notifying me of my mistake. Hey, I was only six!<\/p>\n It might be the case that the mistaken use of alot<\/em> is down to the word allot<\/em> looking so similar. However, since allot<\/em> means to distribute or give out portions of something, there\u2019s no reasonable explanation for the presence of alot<\/em> at all.
